IDEAS AND INITIATIVES SINCE THE COLLAPSE OF LEHMAN BROTHERS

Summary: The first reaction to the financial crises of the decade is to strengthen supervision, rules, regulations and laws. Some ideas are welcome, others more debateable. Some issues have been brought forward by governments, others by institutions such as the BIS, Bank for International Settlements in Basle, some Central Banks, some world organisations, not to mention the numerous supervisory authorities. The article aims at putting some order in all this for further study.

feel that as long as investors will demand double digit earnings on investments, that challenge will require undue risk taking. The regulations are not going to correct this. They will only prevent the reoccurrence in the near future of more of the same.

Key words: bankruptcy, investment bank, liquidity, solvency, guaranty, capitalisation, mergers, splitting up, short selling, derivatives, stress test, interest rate, taxation, monetary fund, supervision, financial centres, treasury, accounting rules, credit rating agencies
